Heath Road, approximately 0.6 miles south of Bagworth, West Leicestershire

The 75-hectare site is on the location of the former Desford Colliery. It includes a demonstration woodland, which monitors the success of a variety of woodland tree species. There is a range of walks and fine views to Thornton and Bagworth.
Bagworth Heath Woods is an extensive area of rolling countryside including woodland, grassland, heathland, lakes and pools. The Woodland Park is generally open to public access on foot and offers relaxing walks and extensive views.
The Woodland Park reflects the objective of the National Forest to increase the amount and variety of wildlife and to this end a diversity of habitat types have been created. Heathland is a habitat that is rich in wildlife but has declined sharply in Leicestershire with only a few fragments remaining concentrated in the nearby Charnwood Forest. Because of this, heathland is a priority for protection and restoration in Leicestershire and a small area of heath is being established on the former colliery tip to contribute to this conservation work
The site today is a marked contrast to its mining past and bears testimony to the success of reclamation work carried out by British Coal in the early 1990's and Leicestershire County Council between 1997 and 1999.
The work was generously funded by English Partnerships, the European Community, the National Forest, the Forestry Commission and Leicestershire County Council.
There are a number of stoned paths suitable for wheelchair access but some assistance will be needed in some places. Other paths are on grass and can be muddy in wet weather.
